Carl W. Hickerson Biography 2013 Carl W. Hickerson, began working for the USFS at age 15, during the summer of 1942. He continued to work for the Forest Service during each fire season through high school and college (except for his time in the Army including fire season 1946), and then full time after obtaining his degree in Forestry from Oregon State University (then College). After a nearly 37- year career with the USFS, he retired in January 1979. Following retirement, he led a forestry project in India with the Food & Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
