Bob Marshall's Letters from Wiseman, Alaska 1930-1931 >> A series letters written by Robert Marshall to friends during his time in Alaska. His sister mimeographed the letters and sent them to his friends. These letters were sent to Harry Gisborne. >> September 23, 1930 19 pages -- Marshall has returned with partner Al Retzlaf after a four week exploration trip to the Arctic Divide. On August 25 we flew to Wiseman. He describes the greeting by many community members. The expedition included the two partners, one employee and two horses. Marshall planned to study tree growth at the northern timberline and explore the upper North Fork of the Koyukuk, 1,000 square mile area. The letter contains a list of accomplishments - mountains climbed, miles traveled, creeks prospected, animals seen and harvested, etc. Includes a sketch map of the area. >> October 6, 1930 10 pages -- Living in a 16 ft X 18 ft cabin in Wiseman for the winter. Includes a lengthy list of book for reading over winter. >> October 26, and 31, 1930 18 pages - Traveled to see a mining operation on the Porcupine River. Describes community life in Wiseman >> November 5, 1930 8 pages -- Election day. Ten day trip to help haul sheep meat back to Wiseman >> December 23, 1930 11 pages -- Dance. Described people in the community >> January 27, 1931 11 pages -- Describes Eskimo friends >> April 10, 1931 19 pages --- Trip to Clear River, one of the three main tributaries of the North Fork. Travel by dog sled >> Future plans -- Summer 1931 in Alaska; October 5 Forest Service Missoula, MT and New York City >> All letters have been scanned as searchable pdf documents. |
