Maynard Rost Oral History >> Rost (1935 - ___) was raised in Bigfork, Montana, Family history; 1961 graduated from the University of Montana, Missoula with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. >> Seasonal Forest Service work began in High School: Smokechaser, Lookout and Packer, District Ranger Arnie Dillard, Swan Lake Ranger District, Flathead National Forest >> Smokejumper, Grangeville 1958, and Missoula 1960 >> 1962 Assistant Ranger, Raven Ranger, Kootenai National Forest >> 1966-1970 District Ranger Red River District, Nez Perce National Forest >> 1970 Fire, Timber & Lands Staff Officer Gallatin National Forest. Work for Supervisors Paul D. Weingart and Gene Hawkes. Talk started about need for coordination between management units in the Greater Yellowstone Area, National Forests and Yellowstone National Park. Weingart knew Public Involvement that we needed to be better. >> Discusses the Bitterroot controversy; Arnold Bolle Report, Dean of the Forestry School had published the Bolle Report. It was very, very controversial. I agreed with most of the recommendations >> After four years (late 1970s) moved to the Kootenai National Forest as the resource coordinator. 1981 Bill Morden made me the Deputy Forest Supervisor >> Next Assignments: Two years as Assistant Director in fire management in Region 6; Forest Supervisor Santa Fe and then the Gila National Forest for ten years. >> Other subjects; Director of the Marana Fire Training Center and Prescribed Natural Fire Program |
