John B. Smith Oral History >> John Smith (1913- ___). Begins with family history. Oldest brother W. C. Smith was a ranger on the South Umpqua District during the late 1920s. Brother Jake Smith has a feather named for him on Butler Butte, the South Umpqua District. >> Oregon State University forestry education, 1935-1938. First Forest Service job after graduation was as a Protective Assistant on the Bobemia District, Umpqua National Forest. 1943 transfer to the Bly District Fremont Forests as Assistant Ranger. 1948 to Wallowa Forest in charge of timber management, engineering, recreation, and lands. >> 1951 moved to the Willamette in charge of fire control. 1957 transferred to Portland Regional Office as Assistant Chief of Fire Control. 1961-1964 Washington Office responsible for fire suppression and hazard reduction. 1964 to Alaska Region as Assistant Regional Forester. 1967 to Region 2 in charge of fire control and air operations. Governor and two other officials died. Merle S. Lowden was Forest Supervisor Fremont National Forest. 4 Pages >> Oregon Japanese Balloon Bombing - On May 5, 1945, six people were killed by a Japanese bomb near Bly Oregon on the Fremont National Forest. Mrs. Mitchell and five children died. Bly District Ranger Fairbeorn M. "Spike" Armstrong and Assistant Ranger John B. Smith gathered first aid kits, blankets, and hike to the site. The Reverend Archie Mitchell pointed the way to the site. The site was on Weyerhaeuser Company land. Forest Supervisor was Lawrence K. Mays. 4 Pages.
