An Interview with Jimmie Rocha >>Oral history interview with Jimmie Rocha, March 23, 2023, San Diego, CA >>In this interview, Jimmie Rocha describes his thirty-six year career in fire control. He started on the Bakersfield Ranger District as a hotshot. Of particular note are his memories about traveling to Mexico City to assist in earthquake relief efforts in 1985. In 1987, he became a permanent employee with the Forest Service. Rocha left the outfit in the late 1980's along with a wave of others who felt they couldn't advance after the Region 5 Consent Decree. He subsequently joined up with the Rio Bravo Hotshots, a local fire crew that became one of the first to get certified to work alongside Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management crews. He also recounts his role on the team tasked with investigating the Yarnell Hill Fire that killed nineteen of the Granite Mountain Hot Shots in 2013.
