An Interview with John V. "Jack" Puckett, Forester, R-1 >>Oral history interview with Jack Puckett by James Wall, October 28, 2021, Missoula, MT >>Jack (given name, John V. Puckett) was born in Burgettstown, Penn., on April 18, 1927, entered the U.S. Navy in 1945 (serving briefly on a destroyer in the South Pacific) and in 1950 graduated from Penn State with a degree in forestry. >>Started as a temp on the Bonners Ferry RD in the late 1940s. After passing his civil service test he got his first permanent assignment on the St. Joe NF in St. Maries, ID. >>While working at Priest Lake he became acquainted with Bob Jansson, one of the few survivors of the Mann Gulch Fire. In this interview he describes Jansson's lingering PTSD from the tragedy and Puckett's role in transcribing Jansson's interviews with investigators. Puckett bounced all over Idaho and Montana throughout his career, notably serving as District Ranger on the old Powell RD in Idaho, and finishing his career as a Fire Officer on R1. |
