"Rik" Eriksson 2000 >> Oral history interview by James L. and Elaine McConnell, February 11, 2000, Decatur, Georgia. >> First Forest Service job was in the summer of 1930 as a Student Assistant after his freshman year at the University of Connecticut; His last position was Deputy Regional Forester, Southern Region R-8 >> 1930 Student Assistant on the Monongahela NF road construction and at the Parsons Nursery; Spruce stumps in West Virginia; 1931 - 1932 summer work on the Shenandoah NF (now George Washington) working on telephone lines, blister rust control, picking cones for the nursery; 1934 went to Mississippi to Leaf River District to a CCC Camp as foreman; Complete devastation of cut-over forests; Tree planting; Delta NF had some virgin bottomland hardwoods; 1939 Texas; World War II Army service Captain of the 800th Engineering Company (Forestry); Trained at Camp A. P. Hill; Shipped to Tunisia Africa and cut and sawed hardwood for Patton's Army; Move to southern Italy cut and saw large amount of timber; Contracted with 55 private mills; Other forestry engineering units in Europe and Pacific; 1945 returned to the Forest Service, 1947-1951 Nantahala NF as assistant forest supervisor; Next job was in the Regional Office, Atlanta as Training and Safety Officer; 1951 to Ouachita NF as forest supervisor; Timber management on the forest; 1958-1962 To Region 2 (Denver) in charge of Timber management; Spraying for insect control; 1963 retuned to Southern Region at Deputy Regional Forester, Jim Vessey was regional forester; Served under Regional Foresters Ed Shultz and Ted Schlapfer; Ericksson vetoed moving Ouachita ranger station to keep office in a key Congressman's district; Early reforestation efforts in Mississippi |
