McConnell and Jerry Henderson, April 18, 2000, Eastover, South Carolina >> Archer Smith spent time in Region 5 and returned to the Southern Region (R-8) to help the region learn how to use fire. Forest Service April 1934 to May 1970 >> Graduated from Penn State University; First Forest Service job at Charleston, SC on land acquisition for the Francis Marion NF, lands had been cut over and mostly burned; Taking the Civil Service exam; Was on the Sumter NF until about 1938; Accepted offer to transfer to California in a fire job on the Sierra NF. Audie Wofford was the ranger; Transfer to Upper Lake District and later Paskenta District, Mendocino NF as assistant ranger; Later in Smith career he detailed to Washington Office to help write the Fire Prevention Handbook; 1938 California started training prisoners to fight fires; 1943 H. M. Sears offered Smith a job in the Southern Region in the emergency fire control program to protect military bombing ranges; 1951-1957 Assistant Forest Supervisor on the Francis Marion NF; Joe Riebold was supervisor; Assigned to the Region Office twice; Fire in Bar Harbor Maine; Building employee housing on ranger districts; Fire control on various regional fires; Verse that Smith wrote; Hurricanes Hazel and Hugo; Naval stores 1936 |
