Branding of Private Wagon,1907 >> In April 1907, Harry N. Morgan, Assistant Forest Ranger, Missoula National Forest, learned S. L. Walker hired men to put in a crop of rye on his "homestead" on Rock Creek, about 29 miles south of Interstate 90. Morgan believed the homestead was located in Section 22, T8N, R17W (the land was not surveyed at this time. (The actual location was near the NW corner of Section 27, T8N, R17W, which is very close to Section 22). >> Eventually Mr. Walker agreed to give up his claim and remove improvement. The controversy started when a ranger used his Forest Service branding axe to stamped "U S" on Walker's wagon. Walker said he could sell his wagon with the "U S" on the wagon >> 12 letters back and forth between Mr. Walker, and the Forest Service in Montana and Washington, DC. Copies of the letters were scanned. >> The site of the Walker's homestead was used by the Forest Service to construct the Rock Creek Guard Station. The cabin in still in being used in 2016. >> Photograph is of the Forest Service cabin on the site today. PDF SCANNED |
