Air Marked Indentifiers for Lookouts in N. California 2007 -- Copy of a March 24, 2007 memorandum by Edward Heilman on the marking of lookouts in northern California during the 1950s to aid in aerial identification of the lookouts. -- Each Forest marked their lookouts with a letter and number. Shasta National Forest Lookouts were numbered S- and then a number for that particular lookout. The letter/number identifiers were painted on the south side of the LO so as to provide yearlong visibility, even during low sun-angle winter months. -- Northern California National Forests also marked the wreckage of crashed aircraft with yellow paint supplied by the Civil Aeronautics Authority. During WWII there were many crashed military aircraft in the region. |
