Samuel W. Stoddard >> 8-page narrative. Entered the Forest Service September 1, 1908. 1905 during the time he operated his sawmill - made application to Targhee Supervisor Home E. Fenn for Douglas Fir sawtimber. Administered timber sale operations of Fogg and Anderson with mill located Ashton, ID. Large cattle permittee fully cooperated in the grazing program. The Wood Live Stock Co. grazed 45 bands of sheep. Company helped define grazing areas for all bands. 1915 promoted to Deputy Forest Supervisor; 1915 approximately 20 sawmills operating on the Forest and 225,000 of sheep and 30,000 head of cattle and horse. Appointed Forest Supervisor of the Targhee September 1, 1917. After 1918 Union Pacific Railroad opened a market for ties. 1929 a serious infestation of mountain pine beetle on Lodgepole Pine started. For insect control organized 20, 10-man camps. Burning method used, successfully.
