An Interview with Ken Johnson >>Oral history interview with Ken Johnson, Vancouver, WA, October 26, 2022 >>Born in Alsatia, LA, in 1941. Became interested in forestry through his high school 4-H Club. Received a full scholarship from the Continental Can Company to attend Louisiana Tech University, where he majored in forestry. After graduating from Louisiana Tech, he enrolled in the master's program at Lousiana State University, where he studied forest recreation. He left graduate school to take a permanent job on the Ukiah NF in northeast Oregon. While on the Ukiah, he worked primarily on land exchanges with local ranchers. In 1967, he left for the Pinchot NF, where he worked as a Land Exchange Specialist. The bulk of these exchanges took place between the FS and the Burlington Northern Railroad. The remainder of his career took him through various jobs, including: Asst. Land Staff, Wallowa-Whitman NF; Planning Team Leader, Hells Canyon NRA; District Ranger, Pinchot NF; Acquisition Team Leader, Alpine Lakes Wilderness Area; Land Specialist, WO; Forest Supervisor, Jackson, MS. Of particular note are his reminiscences of being a District Ranger on the Pinchot NF during and after the eruption of Mount St. Helens.
