A Seasonal Remembers the Bungalow Ranger Station 2009 Brad Henderson of Dallas Texas sent an email to the Museum office describing his experiences working on the Bungalow Ranger District in 1961 and 1962. He also sent two photographs with the email. It is believed Henderson worked just two summers for the Forest Service. In 1961 his crew walked 10 miles into a field camp. The Forest Service planned to supply the camp by parachute drops. After parachute drops failed, the crew packed ( more than 100 pound loads) in all supplies on Army surplus pack frames. The crew consisted of six "engineers" and one cook, all college students. The Universities represented on the crew were - Texas A&M, Central Michigan, University of Idaho, University of Kansas and University of Oklahoma and one local just graduated from Orofino High School. The 1961 crew was called out on 7 or 8 fires - all lightning strikes. The 1962 camp was pack in by mules. There were 15 or 16 mules in the string. There were seven in the crew and all were college students. Henderson stayed on that season after the campo was closed doing some engineering tasks in the office before taking a job with a construction crew building a new highway near Orfino, ID. |
