Blister Rust Control Newspaper Clippings 1961 - 2000 "Spokane man perfects Penicillin for Pines" --- About the effort by Virgil Moss and others to develop an acti-dione (an antibiotic made from a strain of streptomyoces) to control the blister rust disease on Western White Pine in northern Idaho. Moss describes on be became interested in science. Moss has a Masters degree in Plant Pathology from the University of Idaho. His first job was with the US Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Industry. 2, 4, 5-T was used to kill the ribes bushes. Hank Viche stationed on the Kaniksu National Forest tried the new antibiotic treatment -- 400 infected trees near Priest Lake. In 1950, 14, 10 acre test plots were aerial sprayed.
