USFS Reunion 2000 - Sharing Memories 2000 Forms provided to persons attending the 2000 National Forest Service Reunion in Missoula, Montana were asked to record their memories to honor our heritage. Seven completed forms were found in the NMFSH Secretary's records in 2011. The form requested the persons name, Regions and Units assigned, memories of people / events that are part of the Forest Service Legacy and my hopes / expectations for the Forest Service in the new millennium. MEMORIES W. David Kolb -- Many and all good Dale A. Jones -- My first supervisor, Pat Murray, Shoshone National Forest; Bill Hurst; D. I. Rasmussen was his number 1 mentor and Lloyd Swift who headed the Wildlife program Mary E. Nousanen -- Living on ranger station in Idaho and making do with relatively primitive conditions with young children Richard A. Caruso -- He was in charge of a task force that developed an accounting system Ted Schlapfer -- Experiences as Forest Supervisor in 1959, Alaska; Working with ray Karr and Bob Stribl?? Ed Corpe -- John Milodragovich Forest Supervisor of the Lolo National Forest in 1966 forced redesigned of Interstate-90 at Rock Creek to because of safety concerns crossing a railroad track; Construction in 1964 of the Loma Rica Air Attack base, Grass Valley California joint California CDF and Forest Service; Forest involvement of the Bel Air fire in LA California; 1973 stopping Bonneville Power Administration from cloud seeding in the Bob Marshall Wilderness; 1974 Flathead national Forest Oil and Gas leasing EIS Larry Cron -- as a child in the early 1950s he attended a Forest Service summer picnic where Forest Supervisor Art Greeley, Modoc National Forest, entertained children of Forest Service employees at a family social event. EXPECTATION FOR THE FOREST SERVICE Most of the comments were pessimistic on the future for the Forest Service. One suggested that there were too many organizational level, employee reduction is coming at the field (ranger) level; Need give watershed more attention; Concerned about the agency's reputation and credibility; We need stronger fire training; Need better coordination of wildlife and recreation with other resources; need to restore line officer authority and responsibility; Hope that the agency can get out of the resource management grid lock |
