An Interview with Charlie "No Slack" Caldwell >>Oral history interview with Charlie Caldwell, April 5, 2023, San Diego, CA >>In this interview, Charlie "No Slack" Caldwell describes his storied career as a hot shot and smokejumper. Caldwell started working on the Shasta Hotshots as a blaster and became a crew foreman at twenty years old. He left to become station foreman in Redding, California, where he mentored countless young firefighters while running the Redding Hotshots. He was detailed out as a smokejumper in 1965, became a squad leader the next year and performed 96 jumps out of McCall, Missoula, Redding, and Cave Junction. He also details his post-Forest Service career as a deputy sheriff, truck driver, journeyman electrician, and Forest Service contractor.
