Agatha Henley Woods >> 11-page narrative. Completed a course of bookkeeping and stenography at a Commercial College in her home town of Missoula, MT. Seventeen years old and support herself and helping maintain a home for her widowed Mother. Telephone call from the Forest Service asking if would like to work a few weeks. In 1909 she reported to Roy Campbell, Chief of Maintenance at the Missoula District Office. Nervous to make good typing copy with four carbons. Moved to the Office Accounts to write checks. 1910 Civil Service Exam for Stenographer and Typist. Didn't make the grade in shorthand. No Forest Service job for a short time until the Forest Service called again in 1911 an offered a probational appointment. She read the investigation reports from the 1910 fire deaths and injured. Subjected to cigar, pipe and cigarette smoke taking meeting notes. The Office in the Hammond Building was very crowded. Moved into the new Federal Building. In 1915 was offered and excepted transfer to the Washington Office, Atlantic Building, 930 F Street. The "easterners" in the office were curious about her as she was to them. War was declared, Home was calling; returned to Missoula June 1917. She continued with the Forest Service District office until 1926 she resigned to be married. >> A post in the alley behind the Washington Headquarters - was used by John Wilkes Booth to tie his horse when he entered Ford's Theater to assassinate President Lincoln according to legend. >> 1940 memo from Pinchot >> These papers are copies from the Gifford Pinchot Archives in the Library of Congress. Early USFS rangers were asked to send their stories to Pinchot for his planned book. |
