An Interview with Bonnie Ilhardt >>Oral history interview with Bonnie Ilhardt, May 24, 2022, Denver, CO. >>Bonnie Ilhardt, grew up in Eau Claire, WI. She attended UW-River Falls where she majored in biology. After graduating she began working for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). She made her way into the School of Forestry at the University of Minnesota, where she was encouraged to study the embryonic field of hydrology by Dr. Arnett Mace. After finishing her graduate degree she started her career as the Hydrologist for the Superior National Forest. She went on to several other posts throughout her long career with the outfit, including the Chequamegon-Nicollet NF and the Regional Office in Milwaukee. >>Highlights while on the Superior NF include: . Implementing a monitoring program to assess impacts to water/riparian resources from the aerial application of herbicides and then providing testimony to a Minnesota State committee on the results, . Working with research scientists from the FS Ft. Collins Research Unit on analyses of multiple years of water quality data collected from lakes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, . Working with MN Department of Health to assess potential impact to BWCAW users who drank untreated water while on wilderness visits; lead to the SNF and State issuing guidelines for wilderness users on boiling their drinking water, to minimize risk of contacting Giardia. >>Highlights while on the Chequamegon and Nicolet National Forests: . Becoming involved in district projects and educating district staff on importance of small, first order streams, when laying out timber sales, and roads. . The position was upgraded to a GS-12 and filled with the candidate I recommended. >>Highlights from working in the Regional Office: . Developing regional guidance on identifying and managing riparian areas, . Working with Dr. Elon S. Verry, a Research Hydrologist with the North Central Research Station on defining riparian areas, . Co-hosting Advancing the Fundamental Sciences Conference, in San Diego, with Bruce McCammon, and . Serving as the Region 9 American Recovery and reinvestment Act Leader during my last two years in the RO.
