Bertha E. Adams >> 14-page hand written narrative. Received her appointment as stenographer and typist on November 18, 1890 in the General Land Office. The first Forest Reserve was created in California under the Act of September 1, 1890 some of the area within the Sierra National Forest. She typed practically all National Forest proclamations from 1891 to 1900. Lists Forest Reserve proclamation and dates. >> Transfers to the Forest Service in 1905 notes the different atmosphere - sensed the need for public service. 1908 a large part of the records were transferred to the six District Office. Was interested in the new Nebraska National Forest that there were doubts on successfully planting trees in that treeless region. Retired 1929 >> These papers are copies from the Gifford Pinchot Archives in the Library of Congress. Early USFS rangers were asked to send their stories to Pinchot for his planned book. |
