Climbing Granite Peak and Winter Logging Tabloid 1956 Great Falls Tribune (Montana) tabloid of January 8, 1956 featured two articles with photographs about Forest Service Activities: Article 1 --- Winter Logging in the upper Lochsa River area (Powell Ranger District, Clearwater National Forest). Photographs show logger using a chainsaw, loading load trucks, and a bulldozer building a logging road. Cover photo and pages 3 to 7. Article 2 -- "Forest Service Trio Climbs Granite Peak" Granite Peak at 12,850 is the highest peak in Montana (Gallatin National Forest). The three Forest Service officials who climbed the mountain were: T. A. "Thad" Lowary, Regional Office; James R. "Bits" Stephenson, Gallatin National Forest; and Edward C. Slusher, District Ranger, Stillwater District, Custer National Forest. Newspaper Clipping -- Missoulian Newspaper, Ca. 1965 -- District Ranger C. H. McDonald, Stevensville District, Bitterroot NF; Thad Lowary, James R. "Bits" Stephenson, Regional Office in Missoula; Lowary's grandson Donald Harris, and Stephenson's son Bruce, both 11, made up the group that climb the 9,075 foot Lolo Peak to place a second climber registration box bearing the Forest Service insignia. 1962 Forest Service booklet - Granite Peak - Patriarch of the Beartooth Mountains". Gives history of the early efforts to climb the mountains. Elers Koch and others tried to climb the mountain unsuccessfully in 1914. In 1923 Koch and others were successful. |
