Summary |
A History of Florida Forests 2007 When Ponce de Leon landed on the shores of Florida, 27 million acres of virgin timber - chiefly longleaf, pine, slash pine and large areas of cypress, loblolly pine, sand pine, palms and oaks - covered the land. Of the 15 million acres now forested in the state 12 million are privately owned. His lively 500-year history of Florida's forests begins before the Spanish colonized the state, when Native American tribes felled trees to build shelters and canoes, crave ritual masks and weapons and make firewood. Florida historian Baynard Kendrick offers first-person accounts by people who explored, logged, reforested and managed Florida's forests. Commissioned by the Florida Board of Forestry in 1966, Kendrick's manuscript went unpublished for four decades. Barry Walsh has picked up where Kendrick left off, making this the first book to document Florida's forest history through the modern-day. The book contains extensive references to cooperative work between the State of Florida and the U. S. Forest Service. The involvement of Theodore Roosevelt and Gifford Pinchot in Florida forestry is discussed. The 1940 transfer of the Choctawhatchee National Forest to military use is described on page 64. Today it is Eglin Air Force Base and the original National Forest headquarters, named for Gifford Pinchot, is designated as the camp Pinchot Historic District in the National Register of Places. Built in 1910 its wooden houses and shed form the oldest Forest Service administrative complex in the eastern United States. Since 950, Camp Pinchot has served as the residence of Eglin's commanding officer. Chapter 19 - Public Forestry: Federal, State and Local. Includes the names of State Foresters from 1928 through 1969. In 1969 the title was changed to Director, Division of Forestry, Department of Agriculture and Consumers Services. University of Florida School of Forestry directors (Deans) are listed from 1937 to present. Forest Service Supervisors of the Ocala, Choctawhatchee, Osceola and the present day National Forests of Florida are listed. Chronological histories of major Forest Service events are listed (page 485-492). Forest Service research and Experimental Forests is described. Support for publishing the book came from State grants, University of Florida, the Society of American Foresters, and the U. S. Forest Service. |
