The author worked for the Forest Service >> Public Law 273 or the Sustained Yield Forest Management Act of 1944 was an experiment in forest management. The aimed to conserve resources in the traditional sense, but it was also intended to stabilize forest industries and dependent communities by combining federal and private lands into cooperative management units from which would flow continuous supplies of timber. The act was implemented with the Shelton Cooperative Sustained-Yield Unit, a product of nearly three years of careful negotiation between the Forest Service and the Simpson Logging Company of Shelton, Washington (Olympic National Forest).
