Management and utilization. >> Formal research in forestry in the South began about 1921, then the USDA Forest Service established the Southern Forest Experiment Station in New Orleans, LA. The first director was R. D. Forbes, a Yale forestry graduate and former State Forester of Louisiana and a staff of four professional trained foresters. In 1921 the Appalachian Forest Experiment Station was established in Asheville, NC, under director E. H.
