New Forests for Alaska >> The Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA), 1971, directed the Secretary of Interior to review public lands in Alaska to determine areas suitable for National Parks, National Forests, Wildlife Refuges and Wild and Scenic Rivers. To assist in this review, the Forest Service reviewed public lands and proposed certain areas for consideration as new National Forests. >> Eight new National Forests and extensions of the Tongass and Chugach are recommended totaling 42 million acres. This report includes a detailed description and information about each new National Forest recommended. >> See attached List of new National Forests and July 21, 1972 memo from C. A.
