Inside the front cover - signed by Phil Smith on 5/15/2008 Smith was involved in the November 6, 1967 Alianza trial in Las Cruces, NM for the Echo Amphitheater take over (a Forest Service campground on the Carson National Forest in New Mexico) were Reies Tijerina, Chris Tijerina, Jerry Noll, Ezekiel Dominguez and Alfonso Chavez. The federal government was prosecuting for assaulting Forest Officers Walt Taylor and Phil Smith, Coverting government pickup to own use, and conspiracy. A short tribute to Regional Forest Bill Hurst on pages 43 and 44. The beginning paragraph...... In early August, 1963 I moved my family to the Canjilon District of the Carson National Forest. I had been working in the Supervisor's Office in Taos, New Mexico as a Forest wide Range Conservationist since October, 1961, and this was our first Ranger District. Forest Supervisor George Proctor had convinced Regional Forester Fred Kennedy, that he needed someone who knew sheep and cattle, and having been raised on a sheep and cattle ranch in extreme southeastern New Mexico, I was the man for the job. |
