Description |
First Smokejumper Squad, Seeley Lake, MT 1940 June 1940 - This is a very historic picture. Seeley Lake Ranger Station, Lolo National Forest Base Camp. We slept in the tents behind the group. This is the entire group in the first smokejumper squad. Back row - left to right: Glenn Smith - rigger jumper; Earl Cooley, jumper - Lolo National Forest; Merle Lundrigan - Regional Office Missoula, MT(Merie did not jump the 1 st year. This created a lot of tensions and problems. A very good man. He jumped in 1941); Jim Alexander - Cabinet National Forest; Chet "Moose" Derry - rigger jumper (Chet was Frank Derry's younger brother, pioneered this whole effort and was killed in plane wreck down near Hamilton, unrelated to smokejumping in about '43). Merle Lundrigan was the project leader. Front Row -left to right: Rufus "Rufe" Robinson - Bitterroot National Forest; Jim Waite - Clearwater National Forest; Frank Derry - Project Overall Manager (he developed the static line); George Case - District Ranger - Moose Creek Ranger Station, Nez Perce National Forest (the squad was to be stationed at Moose Creek the 1st year); Dick Lynch- Flathead National Forest (Dick and I made our 1st jump together. He became squad leader in 1941 at Big Prairie Ranger Station, Flathead National Forest. I was his Assistant Squad Leader); Bill Bolen - Kaniksu National Forest. Two other prints. The larger prints - poor quality Scanned |
