In the spring of 1899, Forest Reserve rangers Nathaniel E. (Than) Wilkerson and Henry C. (Hank) Tuttle built Alta Ranger Station near the confluence of Hughes Creek and the West Fork of the Bitterroot River in Ravalli County. The rangers used their own money to buy hinges, nails, window glass, and a U.S. flag, making 100-mile round-trip to Grantsdale (south of Hamilton) to purchase materials. They cut, peeled, and hewed the logs for the single-room cabin and covered the roof with bark and dirt. The building was dedicated and the flag raised on July 4, 1899. In 1905, the Forest Reserves were transferred to the newly created U.S. Forest Service in the Department of Agriculture. The Reserves were reorganized as National Forests in 1907-1908."
