President Theodore Roosevelt Signing the Forest Reserve Transfer Bill to US Dept. of Agriculture 1980 >> The painting was commissioned in 1980 by the Forest Service on its 75th Anniversary to commemorate the signing of the land transfer and creation of the Agency in 1905. Artist was Rudolph Wendelin (Forest Service employee, 1933-1972). >> These are some of the principal participants effecting the transfer of the Forest Reserves from the Department of Interior to the Department of Agriculture. This took place in 1905 during the administration of President Theodore Roosevelt. The signing of this transfer marked the beginning of the Forest Service with Gifford Pinchot as its first chief.
