Ohlen-Bishop Faller Two-Man Crosscut Saw 1934 Two-man crosscut saw used for falling trees (these saw types are identified by the curved top part of the saw). Manufactured in Columbus, Ohio. Company markings on the saw: Ohlen-Bishop Saws, No. 133, Radial Arc Ground, Master Sawmakers since 1852. Logo stamped on the saw: NRA Blue Eagle; Lettering stamped on the saw: "U.S. Forest Service." NRA = The National Recovery Administration (NRA) was the primary New Deal agency established by U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1933. It's symbol was a blue eagle. In 1935, the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously declared that the NIRA was unconstitutional. In 1920 the James Ohlen & Sons purchased the Geo. H. Bishop & Co. and the company name was changed to Ohlen-Bishop Company. In "Columbus, Ohio - its History, Resources and Progress" by Jacob H. Studer, published in 1873 The James Ohlen & Sons company was established in 1852 and is described as follows: "Saw Manufacturing - This branch of manufacture is carried on here by Mr. James Ohlen, on a very extensive scale, employing fifty hands. The products for 1872 amounted to $125,000." Also, the History of the city of Columbus, capital of Ohio (1892) by Alfred E. Lee describes sawmaking business in Columbus: "A business in sawmaking was begun about the year 1854, by James Ohlen, who, with very modest resources, made such progress as to enable him to erect a factory at the corner of Spring and Water Streets. The Saw Factory is propelled by steam and proprietors are Messrs. Ohlen and Drake. In 1866, this establishment was considerably enlarged; in 1869, it was producing about eight hundred saws of different sizes and patterns, per day." By 1898 the company was employing 75 workers.
